Thanks for the nudge toward Springboard. I use Evernote for everything from blog post ideas, recipes, layout ideas, crafty project planning, etsy to do’s, etc, but I have always felt it could be tweaked and made a little better, so I am excited to try Springboard. I do wish, however, that it was it’s own app on my Mac, like Evernote, rather than browser based. Perhaps that will come later.

I also wanted to chime in on the Digi Files. I am have been a subscriber for just a little under a year, and I have never regretted it. Everyone was right, no one is going to like all of the kits, all of the time, but I have never had a month where I didn’t keep at least 2 of the kits, usually it’s 3-4 that I like and keep. But even so, if you only keep 2, you get 2 kits and the AWESOME play books, plus whatever free member gifts get uploaded for $7.50? Plus you have months like this one where the group of designers and kits are stellar. And you get to know that you are supporting the Daily Digi and the Digi Show, win win. Every first of the month is, like I think Katie said, like your birthday. I start checking as soon as I get up to see if the files have hit my account. I couldn’t be happier with my subscription and plan on keeping it for a very long time!!

Thank you so much for your membership, support, and taking the time to share these nice things! :) Really appreciated!

You guys were talking about Google tasks… I use the G-Whizz! App on my iPhone. I love it… you can get to anything Google from this app and more. I use it mostly for my email and reader. I like the interface better than the mail app that was preinstalled on the phone. You can also use it for facebook, twitter, Google Calendar, Google docs, Google tasks, a browser window… I love it. The browser is only for one window, unlike Safari, so it hasn’t replaced that for me, but it is so nice to have everything in one place. I also just started using the App Read It Later… it would probably be comparable to evernote or those kinds of apps, but this one will save a link to whatever you are looking at in the app so that you can get to it later. I have been trying it for inspirational scrapbook pages or blogs and also recipes. It has only been a day or two, so no real verdict yet.

Also, I just wanted to mention that when Steph said that she needed a bag big enough for her laptop and camera with wheels… I actually said out loud “and your breakfast tray.”

    Love the show ladies!

Yeah, I kinda forgot about that until I saw this comment come through. I think I have something figured out…hoping…lol!! :)

Student discounts for Adobe products are available for all students, teachers and faculty. There is no reason not to buy the educational versions if you are eligible. If you have kids in school, you qualify (you will need proof of enrollment). And, yes, you CAN use them for commercial purposes as long as they are installed on your own computer. Here’s a great article that spells out the “rules.” One thing I learned is that you CAN get upgrade pricing from the academic version to a regular version if you no longer qualify. Lightroom 4 is only $79 for the educational version. A super, duper deal! And, I did read the limit is one license per application per year.

Awesome info Wendy; thanks for sharing!

    • Peppermint says:

Thanks for all the great information, Wendy! I’m still on the fence about upgrading to LR4, but eventually the nagging nerd inside me wins out because I like having the latest versions of software.

      • Angie says:

Oh, Peppermint, due to the Daily Digi enablers I caved and spent the money. (It killed me – I am very cheap – I buy my clothes at Costco). If it was three hunder I NEVER would have bought it. Now I wish I remember which podcasts had all the lightroom info.

        Love you guys

        Angie

        • Steph says:

We’ve talked about it in almost every episode since the fall. I know it’s not too helpful :(

Here are some posts and sections at The Daily Digi about it though:

  4. Sammie says:

Peppermint, I had the same problem with the fact that things can not be posted privately on Pinterest, so a couple months ago, I searched around and found an alternative that I love: Juxtapost. It looks and works very much like Pinterest, but boards can be private or public. I still use Pinterest for certain boards that I don’t mind being public, to find something specific, or just to browse, and I use Juxtapost for the things I want to keep private.

    More information here: http://www.juxtapost.com/site/permlink/0/about/

    • Peppermint says:

Interesting! I’ll have to keep an eye on that and see if it gains traction. I don’t like spreading myself across too many apps, my feeble mind can’t handle it. I just wish Pinterest would add private boards so I don’t have to look elsewhere.

  5. Steph, I literally SQUEALED out loud when I heard you suggest ONCE as a great show to watch. I could not agree more. My best friend and I are absolutely obsessed– we Skype during the show (since she lives in Maine and I live in Ohio) and it’s so nice to have someone to “geek out” about it. And thank you SO MUCH for alerting me to the podcast! I’ll have to go “geek out” about that as well. And the hidden Mickey’s? I’ll have to keep my eye out for those!

    • Steph says:

Yay!!! My sisters, dad, and kids are Oncers too and it is so fun to email each other with our guesses and speculations! How fun to watch it with a friend over Skype though!

The Once podcast is how I found out about the hidden Mickeys! :)

      How about that Little Red?

  6. Sarah R. says:

I also wanted to comment on Springpad and say thanks for including this in the list! I too have been using Evernote but something always seemed missing for me. I wanted it to be “pretty” like Microsoft’s OneNote but it just isn’t. And OneNote didn’t do it for me either because (for a long time) it wasn’t cross platform. Enter SpringPad – HOW is it that I never read about it before?!?!?!? I don’t know! I set up my account today and was glad to see that you can keep it completely private and locked down since I don’t want to share on yet another social media tool. I will probably still keep Evernote up, at least for a while, but going forward I’ll utilize SpringPad as my main tool.

One other thing – I got giddy when I saw that one of my picks was picked for the show!!! (Fotomag) I suppose there could’ve been more than one person that picked it but I was stoked anyway!! :) Thanks for feeding my tech/ photog/digiscrap “diseases”.

    • Peppermint says:

I really do adore OneNote. Just had to get that out there. OneNote is actually my primary brainstorming/idea organization tool for the design side of my business because it’s so easy to drop inspiration photos and snippets of text into it, moodboard-style, and keep thinks linked to original sources. The fact that it resides on my computer limits its use, but I don’t need that sort of stuff to be mobile anyway. Some sort of hybrid between the standalone capability of Evernote, the free-flowing “no boundary” moodboards of OneNote and the themed templates of Springpad would BLOW MY MIND.

  7. Dawn N says:

peppermint – I was playing around not to long ago with the Google hangouts. They are pretty cool actually and yes you can toggle back and forth between video screen and desktop screen. There is also a new hangouts with Extras that you can preview:
    About Hangouts with extras

Hangouts with extras offers a sneak preview of new Hangouts features. It’s available for a limited time, so try it out and let us know what you think!

    The extras include:•Named hangouts
    •Shared notes and sketchpad
    •Google Docs integration
    •Screensharing

Now I havent logged in and did this with a friend yet – but it looks like on this version your video stays in the right corner and you can share screen shots on the main screen and your video stays in the small corner. Each hangout is by who you invite, I guess that keeps it limited.

    (Just more to think about).

BTW – i dont always have my notebook handy in the car when I am listening to the shows… but I have notes on every piece of paper, envelope, gum wrapper, whatever I can find.

I love the show – I cant tell you how I feel by Thursday going thru digi withdrawls waiting for the new show to be released. You all are so much fun. I am a crazy busy mom of 4 (who isnt busy?) But I certainly dont have time to keep up with many blogs and forums…so I have pretty much limited my communities to just the digi show, dont know what I would do w/o the sanity you all provide.

Thanks for another great show – and awesome tips!! I have to add, you have the best listeners! And although I am an android user (dont hate me b/c I dont share apps like those i-phone user do, I love my phone, I just never go looking for cool apps- besides “draw free” I play with my kids, I am pretty lame in the app world.

  8. Lisa says:

Did Peppermint say exactly which Lightroom preset she uses on import that adjusts the exposure, but not the white balance?

  9. Susan Paquin says:

I would love to get the M-Rock camera bag that Steph mentioned but I cannot find it. Everyone is out-of-stock (Steph, is that your fault?) :)
If anyone locates it, please let me know! thanks.
    ~sue

  10. iamdigiscrapper says:

Hey ladies! I’m loving the show, as usual, and I thought I’d make a suggestion for a show. What do you do when you’ve lost your creativity? Sometimes, especially during the winter, I just don’t feel like scrapping. I can listen to the digishow, keep up with the daily digi, and buy tons of product, but even then I just don’t feel like scrapping. Since y’all have been scrapping so long, maybe you have some tips for when we hit a scrapbooking road block.

  11. Shannon Thomas says:

I use Evernote religiously. I like that I can drop any file type into my account. Then I heard about springpad. I have been playing around with it for a little bit not. I ended up importing my Delicious bookmarks. I think it will work great as a bookmarking tool leaving my Evernote a little less cluttered with stuf. Thank you for the suggestion!

Another awesome show…cannot wait until next week!

  12. Charlene says:

Hi there! Thanks for the digi show, I love it (also love the digi files, what a great deal!).

I want to thank you for talking a bit about what you all use Evernote for. I discovered it through your show a long time ago, and have been using it for ever. But you talking about your process and uses has increased its popularity for me, as I have even more things to use it for. Keep talking about your process for this and I will keep finding news and exciting ways to use Evernote. Thanks so much!

  13. PattiP says:

Steph, Deep does search sub folders. One thing you have to do, after you tell Deep which folder is your “home” folder, it needs time to catalog all your files in that folder. My main folder is my digi scrap supplies folder – I’ve got lots of subfolders and sub subfolders in there. Right now it says there are over 17,000 items in that folder. Once Deep is done doing this, you will see a cloud of subfolder names in the upper right under Location. You can then drill down into subfolders if you want to. I can quickly selection my Daily Digi folder, then whichever month or designer I’m looking for.

Deep is totally awesome, but it did take a little poking around for me to figure out how to use it. Since I scrap almost totally by color, it’s a great help. I don’t bother tagging much anymore because it’s so easy to pull things up in Deep & open them into PSE. It’s well worth spending a little time looking at the documentation to figure out how it works.

Love the Digi Files, the show, and the picks – there’s always something great to check out!

  14. Rachel says:

Just wanted to write and say how glad I am that I found your show. I discovered it through Becky Higgins and am loving listening to all your old shows and getting caught up. It has made me enjoy my work commutes instead of dreading them!

I had a question for Steph….I did Stacy Julian’s library of memories/photo freedom class last year. Because of you guys I’ve been looking at the Findng Photo Flow class as well. It sounds like Steph has done both and I was just wondering if you could give me your thoughts on doing both and what the different classes off in terms of perspective?

Thanks so much for a great show ladies!

    • StudioWendy says:

      Not Steph, but….
I did get this in my email today. You can now take a beginner’s version of Finding Photo Flow from Kayla at Jessica Sprague. It’s only $29 introductory pricing!
      http://www.jessicasprague.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.pbv.tabs.tpl&product_id=2193&category_id=21&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=312

    • Steph says:

I did Library of Memories which is a bit different from Photo Freedom. In talking to Stacy about how she was going to do Photo Freedom though, it is more about getting away from scrapping chronologically and storing photos chronologically and looking for relationships and stories in your photos across spans of time.

Finding Photo Flow is more about getting your photos organized in a system or way that works for you and how your brain works.

I actually think both methods can work together, especially when you use a tagging system.

Just as an FYI, Kayla (who teaches Finding Photo Flow), was the organization software specialist inside Stacy’s Library of Memories the second and maybe third year of those classes. So she is also very familiar with that system too. Although she isn’t teaching it in this class.

      Does that help?

  15. Piccolina says:

I know I am a few episodes behind, but I had to come and thank Peppermint for her pick for episode 30, the wet brush. I laughed as I listed to her talk about it, but I did check it out on amazon and bought one. I have just finished using it on my own hair and it was great. But even more amazing was that I used it on my little girl’s hair (she has incredible curly hair that was a matted mess). IT WORKED!!!. It is usually a 45 minute job to comb her hair out in the bathtub with a cup of conditioner on it. It took about 20 minutes and a lot let whining. So I just wanted to tell Peppermint that maybe she needs to see if The Wet Brush will cut a portion of the sales because I plan to buy several more of them for me and my sisters. I think it is great that you all share pick of the weeks that do not always have something to do with digi scrapping. Thanks again.

  16. Monique says:

Hi ladies, LOVE the digi show. Listen religiously!

I have just bought Lightroom 4 based a lot on what you guys have been saying and because I am not loving iphoto for organisation or picasa. But I have a couple of questions:
    – once I have moved my photos over to Lightroom, should I delete my iphoto library as I don’t want two lots of photos clogging up my drive
    – my problem is I really like the icloud feature of all my photos from my iphone and ipad automatically showing up on iphoto and I also love the Photostream option

So not sure whether you guys use both iphoto and Lightroom or just Lightroom.

Also do I just set up a new catalogue for my scrapbooking supplies when I come to viewing those in Lightroom? Concentrating on my photos first.

So far loving Lightroom, seems very easy and love that I can set up a bunch of stuff to happen automatically.

Peppermint, am going to add your suggested preset too!

Thanks for making me laugh and keeping me inspired!

    Monique

    • Steph says:

I keep my photos and supplies in the same catalog. When I first started, I did put my photos in a different catalog and then I realized for my workflow, I needed to have it all together. I posted some links above that have videos that show how I did everything, which will answer some questions for you.

I have not used iPhoto, but with Lightroom, you can actually set it up so it keeps everything (photos and supplies) in their original locations. So, I would think, you could still use iPhoto and Lightroom together. This way, you wouldn’t have your photos in two places on your harddrive and fill it up.

I will be getting this set up on my Mac in the next couple of weeks with iCloud, so I can talk about it more then. I think it would all work though.

    • StudioWendy says:

I’m not a fan of iphoto for that main reason… it actually stores your photos within the lightroom database (well at least it does with my iphone photos). Talk about making the database excessively large! I copy my iphone photos out each time I sync into my regular file structure (folders by year and date) so they are there for me to find (and ultimately catalog in lightroom but I’m way behind). Personally, even though I love all things mac, I don’t love iphoto!

  17. Elizabeth says:

Hi ladies! I am a new listener and I love your show. Your wonderful picks and recommendations inspire me so much. I have really just started being a digital scrapbooker, but I have completely bogged down the “family” laptop. What computers do you all use to complete your fabulous work? In particular, what would you recommend for hard drive space and speed?

Thanks and keep up the great work ~Elizabeth

  18. Sarah Walker says:

    Two quick questions from back-episodes!

It’s my birthday – yeah! and I’m splurging on a 50mm lens and some actions for my pse (per your advice ladies). But I remember Peppermint (I think) saying she uses some of the actions from TotallyRad, but I can’t remember which episode it was and what she used!! They are all so cool, but it helps to start with something recommended to you first.

Also – I am debating on getting light room and I remember you guys talking about it with metadata. My motto has always been “there has to be a better way to do this” and I want to store my pics right. Someone told me that if iphoto is corrupted, your photos will be too. that is why I’m worried about iphoto. Tips?

    • Peppermint says:

I use TRA2: The Revenge in Photoshop and also their Lightroom Presets (which I see are now called “The Original Version” because they made new ones for Lightroom 4)

Although I very rarely do much of anything with my photos anymore other than give them a bit of a contrast bump and fix any exposure issues – so most of my actions and presets are collecting dust. I stick to the Sterling action for my B&W conversions in Photoshop (it’s from the Fable action set by My4HensPhotography) and in Lightroom I use the “A Beginning…” preset from Totally Rad most of the time, and I also add in their “Brightside | Light” if I want it to look super bright, and “Phil’s Shadows | Feather Lite” which sort of bumps up the deep shadows.

That’s almost my entire photo workflow right there. LOL But I LOVE that I can do it in about ten seconds with just a few clicks, so I can’t beat that!

  19. Steph says:

I use the orginal actions and really like them. I would recommend the RadLab over the actions though. I really love it! I also really like the Lightroom Presets as well.

  20. Amy in TX says:

Here’s a downloadable pattern/tutorial to make your own padded insert to turn any bag into a camera bag:http://www.lilblueboo.com/2010/10/camera-bag-insert-tutorial.html

I haven’t made one yet but the directions are very clear and it has a lot of good step-by-step pictures.

  21. Nicolle Tafoya says:

OMG!!! I was just listening to episode 32 and heard you read my question about the camera bag. I was so excited to hear my question read on the podcast, I nearly screamed. Thanks so much for reading it and thank you for the great suggestions. The 2 bags you talked about both look great and are just what I am looking for. Now I just have to decide if I want to go with the Lowepro or the Olympic Sling.

I also wanted to say that I was so excited to her about the iPhone cover. I just ordered one and can’t wait for it to come.

I love your show. I haven’t done any digital scrapbooking (besides making shutterfly or Picaboo photobooks) in years. I hope to get back to it someday but I just love listening to you guys so much. I would probably listen even if you were talking about how to fix a leaky faucet. Hehe

    Nicolle

  22. Amy in TX says:

I used Evernote until I was in a store one day and couldn’t get a data connection to see my shopping list! It turned out that at the time, don’t know if it’s changed, you had to pay a subscription fee to be able to store a copy on your device. I switched to SpringPad and never looked back! SpringPad will keep a copy cached for you, plus I like all the different note formats it has. I use it on my Android phone, PC and iPad seamlessly.

  23. Pat8 says:

I love Evernote too. Took a look at Springpad and it looks interesting. The main reason I stay with Evernote for everything is that there is not only a copy of everything in the cloud which automatically appears on every device but there is also a local copy on every machine – laptop/desktop – so that even if something disastrous were to happen in the cloud I’d still have copies of everything on my hard drives. It looks like Springpad doesn’t do that and that’s a deal stopper for me personally. It’s pretty frustrating with something on the internet goes down for a day and you can’t get to your “stuff”.

  24. Teri says:

Thanks for the show. I have been keeping my to do lists on “sticky notes” on my desktop and it is not working for me because my desktop gets rather cluttered with them and I find I am pretty good at ignoring them. :) So I was really interested in the task organization that you all talked about on this show. I tried Evernote and just had a hard time making it do what I wanted. I now have signed up for Springpad and find it easier to figure it out. While searching for both in the app store at Amazon, I happened upon Remember the Milk. It seems a lot more basic that Springbad, without all the ease of bookmarking web content, but it so far I think it will be my go to task list. The main reason for this is because of how easy it was to add a Remember the Milk gadget to my gmail account. It puts this nifty little gadget in the right hand side bar that lists out my tasks according to due date and allows me to add new tasks right from there. I am in gmail constantly and having that chronilogical reminder of tasks is great. It also will sync with my Google Calendar, but the great thing about it is that it does not automatically put the tasks on my calendar, thus cluttering up my already cluttered calendar, but it puts a little check mark in the corner of the day and if I click on it a little box opens with my RTM tasks. So, simply for the easy of integrating it with my gmail and google calendar, I think Remember the Milk is great so far. Oh, yes and from what I can tell RTM is available for Mac users as well.
