  1. Haven’t listened to the show yet but just read this Google to retire reader – what are we to do! Will we have to start again with feedly and tell it all our blogs? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-21785378

    • steph says:

I think we need to have a whole show about it! The horror!

    • Peppermint says:

When I logged into Feedly this morning there was a notice at the top saying that they will have a seamless transition from Google Reader into their new “Normandy” RSS Reader, which was built on the Google Reader API. So I went to bed last night totally stressed (seriously!) and then woke up this morning and felt better about life.

      • I like feedly on my Ipad but on my desktop PC reader is perfect for me to quickly see titles of posts I may want to read. I need to replace my igoogle interface as well so my world is coming to an end as I know it on my PC. Any recommendations for something like igoogle?

        • Thanks to a post on SuzyQScraps facebook I’ve found Bloglovin which works on your PC. First looks – OK doesn’t seem to allow me to sort my blog into groups – like must reads, work, etc. I like to do that but its better than nothing.

  2. Sarah R. says:

In addition to Google Reader, the iGoogle homepage is going away as well (in Nov); my replacement for that is netvibes.com. Not as clean looking but a decent alternative.

  3. noodle says:

Although I don’t do scrapbooking (I make cards), I enjoy listening to you.

Just a quick comment as I’m Japanese – Boke is pronounced as something like Boh-Ket but make the Boh sound as short as you can and don’t pronouce t in Ket (like you are going to say Kettle but just pronounce Ke part). The accent (the higher tone) is on Ket rather than Boh.

However, it’s become English now so I guess you English speakers can decide how to pronounce it – just like Karaoke, which sounds completely different from the Japanese Karaoke.

  4. Naomi says:

Before I started listening to your show I’d never used RSS feeds. Now I love catching up on all my favourite blogs and even read these comments through Google Reader!

I tried Feedly (on your show’s recommendation) and loved the interface, but found that I couldn’t see posts that had been read before and that it displayed them in a strange order (I think according to the most social media hits the article had received, rather than the date) which made catching up after a few days difficult as posts from the same blog were in the wrong order!

I switched to Feeddler (unusal spelling!) and really like it. It has a similar interface to Google Reader and you can choose to see unread only or all posts. I’m not sure it’s as ‘big’ and well known as Feedly, so I hope it will be able to find a solution too.

Ronnie, I too will miss Google Reader itself as I use it on my work PC during my lunch break.

    • Peppermint says:

You can change how posts display in Feedly, btw. Both the look (photo cards, titles only, magazine-style, etc) and the sort order (oldest first, newest first, etc). It’s all in the little gear shaped icon on the top right side of the web interface.

For the app interface I believe it’s all accessed via the menu button, but it syncs your settings between the two. I like my feeds to sort “oldest first” but Feedly’s default is “newest first”. If I set it on the web app then it sorts that way on my phone app, too.

  5. Kelly Schmidt says:

I wanted to chime in about the TeamView app that Steph was talking about and tell you about a similar one that I have been using called Splashtop 2 Remote Desktop. It is also free and works on Mac and Android. I have been using it for a while and I have never had any issues with it being too slow. I haven’t used it to scrap because like Peppermint, I need my two monitors but for everything else it works really well so I am sure it would be great for scrapping too. Anyway, I just wanted to throw that out there. Now I am off to listen to the rest of the show. Thanks for all you do!!

    Kelly

    • Addie says:

I use splashtop in my classroom but had not thought to try it for scrapping. I tried TeamViewer tonight and it worked okay once I stopped trying to use my Bluetooth keyboard and keyboard shortcuts. I like the idea that I can scrap from anywhere so long as my laptop is on. Will make crop club that much easier.

    • Peppermint says:

I tried the TeamViewer one out and it’s pretty slick. I’m painfully slow on it, but I’ve utilized it a few times now and I think it’s a solid keeper for me. Like the other night I wanted to read a new eBook I bought but I never loaded it into my eBook software. So rather than get out of bed and go to my office to do it I just used TeamViewer to do it on my tablet. And I had to send a file to someone while I was getting my hair colored, so I used TeamViewer to send that off. Definitely handy! I don’t know if I’d pay for it, LOL, but for free you can’t beat it.

  6. LeslieM says:

I can’t rave enough about the Photoscroll screensaver (Windows only). PhotoScroll is a desktop screen saver based on the scrolling photos screen saver in Windows Media Center. It takes all your pictures and renders them as if they were on a wall. Then it zooms in on the photos, transitions between various photo close-ups and then zooms back out to the scrolling wall of photos. The camera moves along the wall and zooms into another picture and repeats the process of the showing random close-ups and zooming back out. It is extremely flexible. You can set scrolling speed, how many pictures are shown on the wall, image folders, image captions based on file values (date, time, folder, full path, etc.) I have mine set on full path and the photo location on my hard drive is shown (folder and image file number) during photo close-ups. This screensaver runs continuously on my scrapping laptop on my kitchen desk. I’m constantly jotting down photo locations to tag for layouts or project ideas. It’s $6.95 to register the program

  7. Linda says:

I have to giggle about your pronunciation process in the beginning of the show but after Katie kept saying “jen ology” because being raised in MN we say “jean aology”. I went to college with a population of Asian students that would say “invent tory ee” for “inventory”so your show is always bringing me good memories.

And one last thing my uncle went to the Smithsonian and found information about my great great grandfather and his fighting in the Civil War.

    • Katie says:

I’ve never understood the “jean alogy” pronunciation because of the way it is spelled “Gen” – but I also can say “peonies” so I have no room to talk. lol! :)

    • Peppermint says:

I say “jean-ee-ology” too. Because it’s a long e in “gene” .. although I suppose “genetic” is prounced “Jen-etic” so what the heck do I know?

  8. Dawn N says:

Super show – I am still getting through it – But I wanted to call out That Weeds and Wildflowers has some great instagram templates – they are called “Life in the Box” and they are on sale right now too until 3-17 25% off. you can combine (like PL) larger photos with the squares – give a nice mix.

Cant wait to finish listening to the rest of the show –

OH a question for the comment line: I have a cricut (jailbroken version) so I can still use SVG’s and my fonts – all the talk about the sillouhette has me tempted to cross over – has anyone else given up their cricut for the silhouette and can you tell me some advantages for doing so? Is it worth it?

    thanks.

  9. Naomi says:

Great to hear you talking about ‘Who Do You Think You Are’. One of my ancestors actually featured on the show because it turns out I share a great-great-grandfather with Fiona Bruce (a famous newsreader here in the UK). We only found this out because a researcher for the show contacted one of my relatives who had an interest in family history.

It was fantastic to see my great-great-grandfather’s story on TV and I’m so pleased to own the DVD for that series. Turns out he was a photographer, although not a great role model as he ended up in prison for fraud!

  10. L Squared says:

Another wonderful show! I was having a hard and long day at work and listening to the show near the end of the day when you read my comment – consider my day made! I’m glad there is a conversation going on about google reader – I think I’m going to give Feedly a try – their blog has some tips up about migrating over.

I have a short list of random comments I wanted to make:

Today I came across this photo series about chronicling a kids most prized possessions and I thought it would be great inspiration for a page: http://slideshow.nbcnews.com/slideshow/today/gabriele-galimberti-51182411/

When you first started discussing the genealogy TV show I thought of the show “Finding Your Roots” on PBS with Henry Louis Gates, JR. I watched the first season and found it very interesting. The show website has a lot of good information, as well as full episodes. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/finding-your-roots/about/

  11. Subscriber's husband says:

You read a letter from a listener who recommended using a USB-enabled router for photo sharing, printing and possibly allowing outsiders to view the photos online.

While you pointed out some of the downsides of this setup (while making a slight technical mistake in one explanation), I kept waiting for you to point out to listeners what a really terrible idea this is. You never did.

Here are the flaws in the listener’s suggestion, and significantly better solutions:

    1. USB connections are slow (your assumption it was the network in your own experience was likely incorrect). If you get a dedicated NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive, you will get better performance.

    2. If you can connect using a wired network connection, you will do better than wi-fi. The bandwidth and throughput speeds are demonstrably greater.

    3. Backup that is in the house is nice, but it offers less protection that backup offsite. Dropbox and similar services are OK, but if you want to store family photos (and make them available to others), you can’t beat a photo service. We use (and I highly recommend) SmugMug.

    4. Unless you are extremely tech savvy, opening up your home network to the outside is dangerous — I’ve worked in IT and I would NEVER do something that foolhardy. That’s the one I can’t believe you let slide.

    5. Printing via a router is OK if you want your printer near your router. But you can network connect many printers, which again is a better solution. And not all printers are friendly to router-shared USB.

    • Laurel says:

      Hi Subscriber’s husband —

It’s been a few days since I listened to the show, so I don’t remember everything that was discussed. What do you mean by “opening your network to the outside”? Using an off-site back-up service? If that’s what you mean, SmugMug may be great for photos, but what do you use for other files? Just curious.

      Thanks :)

      • Subscriber's husband says:

Hi Laurel, hope this isn’t too late to get to you.

In the show, the writer I’m talking about said she either did or planned to set her router to allow outsiders (presumably family members) to browse photos stored on her computer. Most routers support this, but most people are not savvy enough to set sufficient security in place to protect themselves from a malicious outsider — and as soon as you open the door a crack, a savvy criminal will find a way in if s/he wants to.

There are plenty of viable offsite services for general files — your bookmarks, address book, recipes, letters to aunt Susie. Or you can keep them backed up internally and they generally will be safe. I do have a Dropbox for my work-related documents, and a Sugarsync account for everything else except music and photos (music, bookmarks and addresses, of course, are also on my phone and iPad, so they are redundant and portable).

There are other photo services that are good for consumers — you (and my wife) most assuredly have an account on one or more of them. They’re the ones with cute little names like winkfish and snapr that are used as back ends by photo processors, and are primarily geared toward selling you prints.

We chose SmugMug because it is by photographers, for photographers, and offers us the most options. We discovered it when we had some family photos taken a couple years ago on vacation and that’s what was used to show us the work a week — and 3,000 miles — later. I work for a newspaper, and it’s what we use for our photo back end.

Yes, you have to pay for it. But you get what you pay for. We chose the power account, which allows us to have our own domain and store an unlimited number of photos and videos. The only limits are that photos can not exceed 100 megapixels and videos not more than 20 minutes. You can get a pro account if you plan to sell your work, or a basic account and have greater limits imposed.

  12. Jayne says:

I hope the transition away from google reader will be easy. I can’t believe they are getting rid of it. I have feedly on my Mac and on my iPad. I like to read my blog posts oldest to newest. I can do that on my Mac with feedly but I can’t seem to find a way to do that on my iPad. I have searched and searched but can’t seem to find it. Does anyone have a solution to that for the iPad?

    • Leslie says:

Select a post within a particular blog and then a gear will show up in the upper right hand corner. When you select that gear, you can select “Oldest Articles First”. You have to do this blog by blog, I think, as I see no way to do this globally.

  13. Megan (glumirk) says:

Ok, I had to laugh so hard about the Picard Maneuver! I seriously only noticed “Oh my land” because my sister always says weird stuff like that (I think she’s pretty settled on “Oh my toe”). I think you only said it two or three times, and I just found it weird that of all of the versions I’ve heard (I grew up in AZ, my dad was from UT though) I’d never heard “Oh my land”. I guess that’s what happens when you move to New England. You miss out on all of the good non-swearing slang. Here in NH we just add “wicked” to any adjectives “Wicked good” “Wicked spicy” etc.

I haven’t had a chance to finish the show yet, but I wanted to let you know why I noticed so you don’t have to worry about it. ;)

    • Amy says:

I’m from Mass and what you say about the non-sweary slang is so wicked true :O) although, my preschooler has begun to say “Oh MYLANTA” maybe Steph can try that one out.

      • Tina says:

I have a good friend who says “Oh Mylanta!” all the time. :) I say “Oh my laundry!” Not sure if you’ve ever heard that one, so I thought I would throw it out there.

Ok, so back to this Google Reader thing. Reading the comments from the show was the first I’d heard of this and at first became a little panicky. I use an app called Flipboard that I absolutely adore, but I add blogs to it through Google Reader. I decided to do a little search on what’s going to happen to all of those who add RSS feeds through Reader. I discovered that you can add RSS feeds directly through the Flipboard app and all of the feeds I currently follow will be safe even after GR retires.

        Still lovin’ the show ladies!

  14. Megan (glumirk) says:

Hahaha! I’ve heard “oh mylanta” before! I wonder if that’s what threw me for a loop?

Maybe we can spread “oh my land” through New England. ;)

  15. Suzy says:

Thank you for suggesting the “Market Yourself” book — I’m really anxious to read it. If digital designers are looking for more marketing help, I sell a marketing class at Scrap Orchard geared specifically to digital scrapbook designers that they might find helpful.

  16. Stacia says:

I’ve decided to tip toe back into the Project Life pond after the most recent episodes. I did the weekly approach last year and got a little burned out. However, I have my kids so well trained that they are still sending me photos to use for it, I find I actually miss it! I miss all the little details that I was able to capture with that smaller format. Mine is pretty much photos and words, with few embellishments. I plan to go with a monthly approach for 2013. I still do my normal 12×12 layouts and find that I do have time to do both.

I got myself a Cameo during the recent sale and will be stalking Peppermint and Christine for tips on how to use it and what to make with it. I got so excited about the prospect of printing the 3×4 instagram size photos that Peppermint mentioned from Persnickety that I did a little research on the site and wondered what finish was best. Today, I see Christine (Listgirl) did a comparison which helped me to decide what to order.

Thanks, ladies for the show each week. I listen at work to make the day go a little faster. I enjoy the camaraderie, getting to know new designers and other scrappers and just plain hearing about the hobby I love!

  17. Lynnette says:

Thank you Peppermint, for the visual of Steph stapling marshmallow peeps – literally LOLing over here!! And trying not to wake the whole house as I’m up late working on a blog post. The entire show was great, but that was definitely the cherry on top. I’ll be giggling about that image for a while!

  18. Amber says:

Since we’re all about the shout outs, I figured I’d pop in.. :) For as long as I’m aware, ScrapMatters has had their download links available for 532 hours – random number, don’t ask me – which comes out to about 21 days. So – yay for that, lol.. (Update, I’m kind of a freak and keep records of pretty much everything.. I just went and checked my first order at SM from March of ’09, and it was 532 hours then, too.)

Anyway – great show, ladies.. And it’s true, as soon as I heard about Google Reader, my first thought was of Peppermint and how it would drastically alter her world.. ;)

  19. Gennifer says:

Just thought I’d let you know that downloads at P&Co are available for ten years, or three months after a designer retires a product. No rush, and no problems if you suffer a HD failure. :)

  20. SarahT says:

Hey…Just wanted to pop in and say that I read the book Generation iY, and it is wonderful. It’s definitely written for adults to read. It’s not really geared toward teens. As a high school teacher, teen mentor and church youth group leader, the info I learned was invaluable. It gave me strategies for encouraging this generation to make wise choices on how they interact with modern media so that they don’t make mistakes they regret. It’s not a “preachy” book. It’s researched based and encouraging.

  21. Becky says:

    A Rad Lab question:
I want to start figuring out Lightroom to edit my photos, but I’m confused with what to get. Should I get Rad Lab and just use that or the Lightroom preset option. Any help would be great!

  22. Tammy says:

I had to pop in and say that I LOVE your show titles! Being a major Trekker, this one really caught my attention ;)

  23. Lahni says:

This isn’t related to this episode in particular but after hearing you guys talk about Smash books so often, I finally googled them. I watched their video and immediately had to order some. I ordered one for each of my kids for me to keep all the little things they make for me. I’m always saying I’m going to write down all the cute things they say and I think this little book will be perfect for that too. I also bought one for my oldest son because this is just the kind of thing he loves to do. I can’t wait to get them in the mail!
I also texted a good friend about them and I’m pretty sure she’s going to buy some too. Maybe you should earn a commission?

  24. Mary says:

Hi ladies. I really loved this show and all of the great info! Peppermint, my son heard you talking about lifehacker and said “mom, it sounds like you are listening to yourself”, lol. I wanted to thank all of you for occasionally bringing up the topic of online safety for our children. I am often shocked and amazed at how many parents have given their kids smart phones, yet have no idea what they are doing with them only to find out horrors later. Fortunately, most in the digi community are tech savvy and no how to monitor their kids online presence. Many parents, however, are clueless in this arena. I look forward to reading the books you suggest and also wanted to let you know about a great book called iParent that you can also find on Amazon. It was written by a pastor at a church in my area. http://www.amazon.com/iParent-Gender-Trends-Online-Friends/dp/0578089289/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365516512&sr=8-1&keywords=iparent

  25. Mary Moseley says:

Just wanted to give a shout out about Design House Digital (www.designhousedigital.com). When you purchase digital kits from their site they are available to you FOREVER via your “craft closet” on their site. How cool is that?!!

  26. Shannon Kay says:

I’ve been using LogMeIn for a long time to remote into my desktop and lately I’ve been using the screens app to remote in to my Mac from the local network and it uses the native screen sharing stuff.

I use Lightroom and I have my import settings so that when I import photos it makes a copy to the photos folder on our server. (14TB server on our network – our media library is extensive).

  27. Shannon Kay says:

Oh yeah, and my husband and I are big Star Trek fans. We’ve watched TNG-DS9-VOY in Airdate order. It’s really fun to watch it that way!

  28. Have you ever considered about including a little bit more than just your
articles? I mean, what you say is important and everything.

Nevertheless just imagine if you added some great pictures or videos
to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and videos, this
website could undeniably be one of the best in its field.

    Superb blog!

  29. Steph says:

    hey ladies,

    Re: Bokeh

You say tomato, I say tomAhto…

But, there is an entry in Wikipedia I thought I would share:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh

I had only ever heard it pronounced as bo-kay so I was surprised to hear it pronounced differently. Of course, that meant I had to look it up! ;)

    Have a great day,

    Steph
